The Nature Explore Classroom

at Bailey Arboretum

2nd Year Certification

The Children's Habitat at Bailey Arboretum is celebrating their 3rd year as a certified Nature Explore Classroom.

The Nature Explore Classroom at Bailey Arboretum has enlarged the Children’s Habitat this year by approximately 1/4 acre by improving underground drainage in an otherwise swampy area. This open space is being used every day by families and visiting groups and provides a wonderful open area for games, crafts and events.

Pumpkins have been planted in an old concrete cold
frame. Local Girl Scouts will care for the pumpkins and also
vegetables that have been planted in two new raised, wood frame beds. Bailey staff and a local garden club will guide the planting and care of these new garden areas.

Information on Family Day, the Pumpkin Festival and
monthly nature walks reach children and families through electronic handouts. Programs include opportunities for
children and their parents to enjoy the outdoor classroom, plant, explore marked trails, study creatures on the ponds and learn about everything from bees to red tailed hawks.

Bailey Arboretum was awarded the Nassau County Girl Scout’s annual “Making a Difference for the Youth of Long Island” award in November 2010 and is collaborating
actively with the 23,000 member Girl Scout organization.

The Volunteers for Wildlife will be moving to Bailey Arboretum soon. This local organization rehabilitates injured wild animals and will provide a wide variety of additional educational programs at the Arboretum.
