Named to honor the prestigious Arnold Arboretum's 100th anniversary, Centennial Star magnolia produces a spectacular show of large, creamy white flowers in early spring. The lightly fragrant blooms have many thin, delicate petals tinged with pink. Later in summer attractive, conelike, 2"-3" reddish green seed pods appear, opening by slits to reveal their red, pink, or orange seeds.

Named to honor the prestigious Arnold Arboretum's 100th anniversary, Centennial Star magnolia produces a spectacular show of large, creamy white flowers in early spring. The lightly fragrant blooms have many thin, delicate petals tinged with pink. Later in summer attractive, conelike, 2"-3" reddish green seed pods appear, opening by slits to reveal their red, pink, or orange seeds. New leaves emerge with a bronze cast, turning medium to dark green then yellow to bronze in the fall. Dense branching, smooth, silvery gray trunks, shiny chestnut brown twigs, and fat, fuzzy buds add winter interest. This hardy, small tree or shrub grows slowly 15'-25' high with a 10'-20' spread. It adapts to a wide range of soil and site conditions but prefers full sun, moist, acidic, well drained soil in cool spring locations. Avoid alkaline soils and harsh windy sites. zones 4-8.
