New leaves emerge with a bronze cast, turning medium to dark green then yellow to bronze in the fall. Dense branching, smooth, silvery gray trunks, shiny chestnut brown twigs, and fat, fuzzy buds add winter interest. This hardy, small tree or shrub grows slowly 15'-25' high with a 10'-20' spread. It adapts to a wide range of soil and site conditions but prefers full sun, moist, acidic, well drained soil in cool spring locations. Avoid alkaline soils and harsh windy sites. zones 4-8.
